Hinsdale Hospital Implements Cogeneration

Hinsdale Hospital is in the process of installing a Cogeneration Facility. The facility will consist of four (4) Caterpillar 3516, lean burn, natural gas fired reciprocating engine generator sets which will produce a total of 3,240 KW at 4,160 V. Each set will be provided with heat recovery on the engine exhaust which will produce a total of 3600 pph of 75 psig steam. Cooling water to the system is provided by a cooling tower. The cogeneration facility is constructed in an existing maintenance area.

The interconnection with ComEd con-forms to Plan B. The installation includes provisions for black start. A computer/plc based control system is provided along with the MSLC/DSLC engine control system.

The system is expected to be in operation by mid to late 1996.

The cogeneration system is being constructed on a turnkey design-build basis by Midwesco Mechanical and Energy, a division of Midwesco Inc., located in Niles, IL.
