New Bartlett High School to Install Cogeneration System

School District U-46, Elgin, Illinois has recently approved the construction of a 1600 kw cogeneration system at its new Bartlett High School facility in Bartlett, Illinois. The heart of the cogeneration system is (2) two Caterpillar 800 kw natural-gas engine-generator sets supplied by Patten Power Systems, Elmhurst, Illinois. The cogeneration system will operate during Commonwealth Edison's (ComEd) peak energy periods (9:00am-10:00pm Monday-Friday). The cogeneration system operates parallel with the electric utility under ComEd's Plan "B" interconnection requirements. Standby power is purchased under ComEd's Rate 18. The cogeneration system will also provide standby power to the facility for electric utility outage protection. The cogeneration system utilizes hot water heat recovery from both engine jacket and exhaust. The waste heat is used in con-junction with proposed boilers and an absorption chiller for building heating and cooling requirements. The cogeneration system is being installed as part of the new 350,000 sq. ft. facility. KJWW Engineering, Rock Island, Illinois is the engineering-design firm.
