Brookfield Zoo to Install 2200 kWe Cogeneration System

Brookfield Zoo, Brookfield, Illinois has recently begun construction of a 2200 kWe cogeneration system. The cogeneration system is comprised of (2) two Waukesha 7100 GL 1100 kw lean burn natural gas engine-generator sets supplied by Charles Equipment Company, Addison, Illinois. The cogeneration system will operate during Commonwealth Edison's (ComEd) peak demand periods (9:00 am - 6:00 pm, Monday-Friday). The cogeneration system will operate in parallel with the electric utility under ComEd's Plan "B" interconnection requirements. Backup power for the cogeneration system is purchased under ComEd's Rate 18. In addition to the cogeneration system, a 1600 kw DMT diesel engine-generator set will provide standby power to the site to help protect against utility power outages. The switch gear and generator controls were manufactured by Zenith Controls of Chicago, Illinois. The system does not utilize waste heat recovery from the engines at this time. The system is being installed as part of overall site expansion and renovation projects. NICOR Energy Ventures, Naperville, Illinois is the project developer, Midwesco Mechanical & Energy, Niles, Illinois is the design build contractor.
